Suppliers from Poland Enjoy Skyrocketed Rye Imports in Germany
IndexBox has just published a new report: 'World - Rye - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights'. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.
In 2020, the global rye imports rose by 54% y-o-y, owing primarily to the increased supplies to Germany. Over the last year, this country ramped up its imports nearly twofold, from 484 tonnes to 902 tonnes, and remains the major rye importer worldwide. Near 87% of imported rye came to Germany from Poland, the leading global exporter.

In 2020, purchases abroad of rye increased by 54% to 1.9M tonnes, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. In value terms, rye imports surged to $409M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
Germany represented the key importer of rye in the world, with the volume of imports recording 902K tonnes, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2020. Poland, the leading global exporter of rye, accounted for 87% of the total imports into Germany and buoyed the growth in Germany's imports. This reflected the growth of rye production in Poland, which grew by +27% to 3.4M tonnes in 2020, according to a preliminary estimate by Eurostat.
Spain (325K tonnes) took a 17% share (based on tonnes) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the U.S. (14%) and the Netherlands (8.7%). The following importers - Latvia (40K tonnes) and Belgium (36K tonnes) - each finished at a 4% share of total imports.
Germany was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rye imports, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012 to 2020. At the same time, Belgium (+9.1%), Spain (+7.2%) and the U.S. (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Netherlands (-4.0%) and Latvia (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
In value terms, Germany ($166M) constitutes the largest market for imported rye worldwide, comprising 41% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the U.S. ($67M), with a 16% share of global imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 15% share.
In 2020, the average rye import price amounted to $213 per tonne, falling by -14% against the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2020, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the U.S. ($253 per tonne) and Belgium ($206 per tonne), while Germany ($184 per tonne) and Latvia ($184 per tonne) were amongst the lowest.
