Global Mower Market Reached 25.7M Units in 2015

According to market research conducted by IndexBox, in 2015, the global market for mowers decreased to 25.7 million units, which was 0.9 million units (or 4%) less than the year before and 13.7 million units (or 34%) below the highest level of consumption recorded in 2008.

After a significant market decline in 2009, the mower market gradually stabilized over the 4 years that followed. However, in 2013, it started a downward trend, declining slightly over the last two years. In 2015, the market dropped by 9% in value terms, ending the year at 7.6 billion USD.

The U.S. (3,267 thousand units) and China (3,086 thousand units) were the countries with the highest consumption, together comprising nearly 25% of global consumption. The third place was occupied by Germany (7%), followed by the UK (6%). Among the leading consuming countries, high levels of per capita consumption levels were recorded in the UK (30 unit/1,000 persons in 2015) and Germany (26 unit/1,000 persons), which significantly exceeded the world average of 3 units/1,000 persons. Germany had the most notable annual growth of per capita consumption from 2007 to 2015, with +14.9% growth.

Mowers are a widely traded commodity, with the share of exports in total global output standing at about 67% from 2007 to 2015. High trade intensity is determined mainly by the geographical distinction between the main mower manufacturing countries and the key consuming countries.

In 2015, the volume of global exports totaled 18.3 million units, with mild fluctuations over the last six years after a contraction by 22% in 2009. China (10.0 thousand units) was the main global supplier of mowers with a 55% share of global exports. The U.S. held the second place in the ranking with a 7% share, followed by Mexico (5%) and France (4%).

The volume of global imports totaled 16.8 million units in 2015. Import dynamics were generally in line with exports, as these trade flows globally complement each other. Following the high trade intensity, the share of imports in global demand accounted for about 65%. In 2015, Germany (2.6 million units, with a share of 16% of global imports), followed by U.K. (10%), the U.S., and France (9% each) were the leading destinations of imports of mowers, together making up 44% of global imports in physical terms.
