Global exports peaked in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

France represented the key exporting countries with an export of about 2.8B litres, which finished at 34% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Italy (1.5B litres) and Belgium (705M litres), together making up 27% share of total exports. Germany (352M litres), Fiji (312M litres), Luxembourg (176M litres), the United Arab Emirates (149M litres), the U.S. (147M litres), Georgia (146M litres), Malaysia (142M litres), the UK (127M litres) and Croatia (123M litres) occupied the weak share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Croatia (+26.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mineral water markets worldwide were France ($838M), Italy ($586M) and Belgium ($237M), together accounting for 63% of global exports. Fiji, Georgia, Germany, the UK, the U.S., the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Luxembourg and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Export Prices by Country

The average mineral water export price stood at $318 per thousand litres in 2017, surging by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the mineral water export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2017, the country with the highest export price was Georgia ($652 per thousand litres), while Luxembourg ($97 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Georgia (+1.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mineral Water Imports

Imports 2007-2017

Global imports amounted to 8.4B litres in 2017, approximately equating the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded over the period under review.

In value terms, mineral water imports totaled $2.7B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017.

Imports by Country

Belgium (1.2B litres) and Germany (1.2B litres) represented the major importers of mineral waters and aerated waters in 2017, accounting for near 14% and 14% of total imports, respectively. The U.S. (647M litres) occupied the second position in the ranking, followed by the UK (634M litres), France (458M litres), Switzerland (415M litres) and the Netherlands (400M litres). All these countries together occupied near 30% share of total imports. The following importers - Japan (340M litres), South Korea (198M litres), Oman (146M litres), Palestine (145M litres) and Singapore (138M litres) together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by South Korea (+39.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($466M) constitutes the largest market for imported mineral waters and aerated waters worldwide, comprising 17% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Belgium ($225M), with a 8.3% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 8.2% share.

Import Prices by Country

The average mineral water import price stood at $321 per thousand litres in 2017, surging by 3.3% against the previous year. In general, the mineral water import price continues to indicate a mild slump.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was the U.S. ($720 per thousand litres), while Singapore ($151 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by the U.S. (+1.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
