Global exports peaked at $1.1B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (846K tonnes), Viet Nam (712K tonnes), France (648K tonnes), Belgium (639K tonnes), Malaysia (434K tonnes), Argentina (371K tonnes), the U.S. (321K tonnes), Canada (293K tonnes), the Czech Republic (251K tonnes), Spain (234K tonnes), China (221K tonnes) and Norway (194K tonnes) represented roughly 64% of total exports of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime in 2017.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Viet Nam (+23.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lime markets worldwide were Germany ($91M), France ($87M) and Belgium ($79M), together comprising 27% of global exports. Viet Nam, the U.S., Malaysia, Canada, Argentina, China, Spain, the Czech Republic and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Export Prices by Country


The average lime export price stood at $117 per tonne in 2017, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the lime export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was the U.S. ($178 per tonne), while the Czech Republic ($87 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by China (+9.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2017, the amount of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime imported worldwide totaled 8.1M tonnes, declining by -2.1% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years.

In value terms, lime imports amounted to $1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded over the period under review. Over the period under review, global lime imports reached their peak figure at $1.2B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country


The Netherlands (791K tonnes), India (574K tonnes), Germany (467K tonnes), Taiwan, Chinese (455K tonnes), Chile (454K tonnes), France (439K tonnes), Finland (414K tonnes), the U.S. (324K tonnes), Canada (317K tonnes), Belgium (250K tonnes), Democratic Republic of the Congo (223K tonnes) and Sweden (187K tonnes) represented roughly 60% of total imports of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime in 2017.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+37.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lime markets worldwide were the Netherlands ($99M), Chile ($73M) and the U.S. ($55M), together comprising 22% of global imports. These countries were followed by Finland, India, Germany, Canada, France, Taiwan, Chinese, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sweden and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Import Prices by Country


In 2017, the average lime import price amounted to $124 per tonne, rising by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was the U.S. ($171 per tonne), while Taiwan, Chinese ($78 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
