The global flax fiber market soared to $2.7B in 2019, picking up by 18% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price).
Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2013 to 2019: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last six-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, consumption increased by +70.7% against 2013 indices. Global consumption peaked in 2019 and is likely to see steady growth in the years to come.
Consumption by Country
France (519K tonnes) constituted the country with the largest volume of flax fiber consumption, accounting for 57% of the total volume. Moreover, flax fiber consumption in France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, China (185K tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Russia (38K tonnes), with a 4.2% share.
From 2013 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume in France totaled +7.1%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: China (+3.7% per year) and Russia (-2.2% per year).
In value terms, France ($1.5B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China ($579M). It was followed by Belarus.
In 2019, the highest levels of flax fiber per capita consumption was registered in France (7.90 kg per person), followed by Belarus (3.76 kg per person), Belgium (3 kg per person) and the Netherlands (1.14 kg per person), while the world average per capita consumption of flax fiber was estimated at 0.12 kg per person.
Market Forecast to 2030
Taking into account the drop in the global economy and hampered consumer spending due to the pandemic, it is expected that in 2020, the global consumption of flax fibers should stagnate against 2019. In the medium term, as the global economy recovers from the effects of the pandemic, the market is expected to grow gradually. Overall, market performance is forecast to pursue a slightly upward trend over the next decade, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +0.6% for the period from 2019 to 2030, which is projected to bring the market volume to 979K tonnes by the end of 2030 (IndexBox estimates).
Production
In 2019, approx. 902K tonnes of flax fiber were produced worldwide; increasing by 3% on the previous year's figure. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2013 to 2019; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by moderate growth of the harvested area and a tangible increase in yield figures.
Production by Country
The country with the largest volume of flax fiber production was France (682K tonnes), comprising approx. 76% of total volume. Moreover, flax fiber production in France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belgium (95K tonnes), sevenfold. Belarus (40K tonnes) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.4% share.
In France, flax fiber production expanded at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2013-2019. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+5.9% per year) and Belarus (-2.1% per year).
Harvested Area
The global flax fiber harvested area declined slightly to 239K ha in 2019, approximately reflecting 2018 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2013 to 2019; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 8.9% year-to-year. The global harvested area peaked at 240K ha in 2018 and then fell slightly in the following year.
Yield
In 2019, the global average flax fiber yield expanded to 3.8 tonnes per ha, with an increase of 3.3% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2013 to 2019; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years.
Imports
In 2019, approx. 292K tonnes of flax fiber were imported worldwide; picking up by 8.3% in 2018. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2013 to 2019; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Global imports peaked in 2019 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future. In value terms, flax fiber imports surged to $937M (IndexBox estimates) in 2019.
Imports by Country
China was the main importer of flax fiber in the world, with the volume of imports finishing at 173K tonnes, which was near 59% of total imports in 2019. Belgium (36K tonnes) occupied the second position in the ranking, followed by India (20K tonnes) and the Netherlands (16K tonnes). All these countries together held approx. 24% share of total imports. Lithuania (9.6K tonnes) and Poland (5.8K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2013 to 2019, average annual rates of growth with regard to flax fiber imports into China stood at +5.5%. At the same time, India (+19.7%), the Netherlands (+12.4%), Poland (+4.3%), Belgium (+2.4%) and Lithuania (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2013-2019.
In value terms, China ($599M) constitutes the largest market for imported flax fiber worldwide, comprising 64% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Belgium ($105M), with a 11% share of global imports. It was followed by India, with a 8% share.
From 2013 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +12.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+8.2% per year) and India (+23.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average flax fiber import price stood at $3,212 per tonne in 2019, rising by 21% against the previous year. Over the last six years, it increased at an average annual rate of +6.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 22% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2019 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2019, the country with the highest price was India ($3,782 per tonne), while the Netherlands ($799 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
