The global flax fiber market soared to $2.7B in 2019, picking up by 18% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price).

Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2013 to 2019: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last six-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, consumption increased by +70.7% against 2013 indices. Global consumption peaked in 2019 and is likely to see steady growth in the years to come.

Consumption by Country

France (519K tonnes) constituted the country with the largest volume of flax fiber consumption, accounting for 57% of the total volume. Moreover, flax fiber consumption in France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, China (185K tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Russia (38K tonnes), with a 4.2% share.

From 2013 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume in France totaled +7.1%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: China (+3.7% per year) and Russia (-2.2% per year).

Market Forecast to 2030

Taking into account the drop in the global economy and hampered consumer spending due to the pandemic, it is expected that in 2020, the global consumption of flax fibers should stagnate against 2019. In the medium term, as the global economy recovers from the effects of the pandemic, the market is expected to grow gradually. Overall, market performance is forecast to pursue a slightly upward trend over the next decade, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +0.6% for the period from 2019 to 2030, which is projected to bring the market volume to 979K tonnes by the end of 2030 (IndexBox estimates).
