Global Dried Onion Trade Hit $444M

Global Dried Onion Exports
In 2020, overseas shipments of dried onions increased by 5.1% y-o-y to 218K. In value terms, supplies soared to $444M (IndexBox estimates). The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2010 to 2020.
India (68K tonnes) was the major exporter of dried onions, comprising 31% of total supplies in 2020. It was distantly followed by the U.S. (27K tonnes), Spain (22K tonnes), China (19K tonnes), Malaysia (16K tonnes), Egypt (14K tonnes) and Uzbekistan (11K tonnes), together mixing up a 49% share of total exports.
In value terms, India ($133M), the U.S. ($83M) and China ($53M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, together accounting for 60% of global exports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Spain, Malaysia and Uzbekistan, which together accounted for a further 17%.
In 2020, the average dried onion export price amounted to $2,035 per tonne, growing by 14% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the U.S. ($3,072 per tonne), while Uzbekistan ($246 per tonne) was amongst the lowest. From 2010 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Top Largest Dried Onion Importers Worldwide
Germany ($59M), the UK ($37M) and Japan ($28M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2020, with a combined 28% share of global supplies. The Netherlands, Canada, Brazil, Belgium, Indonesia, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Kazakhstan and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
