Global Copper Matte Imports by Country
In 2020, global copper matte imports surged to 374K tons, picking up by 27% against 2019 figures. In value terms, supplies soared from $0.8B to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates).
Russia was the key importing country with a volume of about 145K tons, which resulted in 39% of total purchases. South Korea (66K tons) ranks second in terms of total imports with an 18% share, followed by China (15%) and Belgium (11%). Australia (11K tons), Uzbekistan (9.3K tons), and Finland (8.5K tons) occupied a minor share of total volume.
In value terms, Russia ($540M) constitutes the largest market for imported copper mattes and cement copper worldwide, comprising 47% of global purchases. The second position in the ranking was occupied by South Korea ($180M), with a 16% share of global imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.
In 2020, imports into Russia grew threefold. The remaining importing countries recorded the following annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+18.9% per year) and China (+37.7% per year).
In 2020, the average copper matte import price amounted to $3,110 per ton, jumping by 18% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Finland ($5,515 per ton), while Uzbekistan ($1,848 per ton) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+72.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Leading Copper Matte Suppliers Worldwide
Finland (39K tons), Canada (35K tons) and Belgium (31K tons) represented roughly 43% of total exports of copper mattes and cement copper in 2020. It was distantly followed by Norway (20K tons), Brazil (17K tons) and India (12K tons), together making up a 20% share of total volume. Cambodia (11K tons), Japan (9.1K tons), Germany (8.5K tons), South Korea (7K tons), Thailand (6.2K tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.6K tons) and Indonesia (5K tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
In value terms, Finland ($353M) remains the largest copper matte supplier worldwide, comprising 40% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($161M), with an 18% share of global value. It was followed by Belgium, with a 6.3% share.
