In 2017, the global bottled water market revenue amounted to $144.2B. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded over the period under review.

Production 2007-2017

In 2017, approx. 354B litres of bottled water were produced worldwide; rising by 8.5% against the previous year. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when it surged by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global bottled water production attained its peak figure volume in 2017, and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Bottled Water Trade

In 2017, the amount of bottled water exported worldwide stood at 11B litres, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2007 to 2017: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. Based on 2017 figures, the bottled water exports increased by +64.0% against 2011 indices.

In value terms, bottled water exports amounted to $3.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2007 to 2017.

Exports by Country

In 2017, France (3B litres), distantly followed by Italy (1.5B litres), China (1.4B litres) and Belgium (804M litres) were the largest exporters of bottled water, together making up 62% of total exports. Turkey (424M litres), Germany (412M litres), Fiji (312M litres), Luxembourg (182M litres), the U.S. (175M litres) and Malaysia (171M litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Fiji (+22.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bottled water markets worldwide were France ($928M), China ($653M) and Italy ($596M), together accounting for 58% of global exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, the U.S., Germany, Fiji, Turkey, Malaysia and Luxembourg, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Export Prices by Country

The average bottled water export price stood at $346 per thousand litres in 2017, jumping by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the bottled water export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was the U.S. ($790 per thousand litres), while Luxembourg ($107 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by the U.S. (+7.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Country

In 2017, Germany (1.3B litres), Belgium (1.3B litres), the U.S. (1B litres), the UK (723M litres), China, Hong Kong SAR (712M litres), France (503M litres), the Netherlands (466M litres), Switzerland (422M litres), Japan (398M litres) and Singapore (373M litres) represented the major importers of bottled water in the world, making up 66% of total import. The following importers - Oman (211M litres) and South Korea (199M litres) each accounted for a 3.7% share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by South Korea (+39.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bottled water markets worldwide were the U.S. ($655M), China, Hong Kong SAR ($649M) and Belgium ($257M), with a combined 40% share of global imports. Germany, Japan, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, South Korea, Singapore and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2017, the average bottled water import price amounted to $353 per thousand litres, going up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the bottled water import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was China, Hong Kong SAR ($911 per thousand litres), while Singapore ($112 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by China, Hong Kong SAR (+6.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
