Leek Price in France Accelerates its Growth for Three Consecutive Months, Reaching $2,305 per Ton

France Leek Import Price in August 2022

In August 2022, the leek price stood at $2,305 per ton (CIF, France), surging by 25% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a buoyant increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +10.1% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, leek import price increased by +129.6% against April 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 an increase of 63% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in August 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($13.2 per kg), while the price for Belgium ($1,237 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

France Leek Imports

In August 2022, approximately 468 tons of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were imported into France; reducing by -63.1% against the previous month's figure. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 with an increase of 85% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.4K tons. From May 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports reduced sharply to $1.1M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 when imports increased by 12% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 2.8K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

France Leek Imports by Country

In August 2022, Belgium (333 tons) constituted the largest leek supplier to France, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, leek imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (37 tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Thailand (24 tons), with a 5.1% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium totaled -22.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Spain (-15.5% per month) and Thailand (-5.7% per month).

In value terms, Belgium ($412K), Thailand ($312K) and Morocco ($166K) were the largest leek suppliers to France, with a combined 82% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +3.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
