Fiberboard Price in U.S. Grows Steadily to $478 per Cubic Meter
U.S. Fiberboard Import Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the fiberboard price stood at $478 per cubic meter (CIF, US), stabilizing at the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 6.1% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in August 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Chile ($790 per cubic meter), while the price for Germany ($201 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Fiberboard Imports
In August 2022, overseas purchases of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials increased by 3.3% to 435K cubic meters for the first time since May 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +5.1% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 29% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 454K cubic meters in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fiberboard imports rose slightly to $208M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +7.3% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +4.5% against July 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 28% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in August 2022.
U.S. Fiberboard Imports by Country
Chile (82K cubic meters), China (76K cubic meters) and Canada (75K cubic meters) were the main suppliers of fiberboard imports to the United States, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Germany, Vietnam, Austria and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 36%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +19.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fiberboard suppliers to the United States were Chile ($65M), Canada ($50M) and Brazil ($30M), with a combined 69% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +17.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
