Date Imports in EU Steadily Rise, Hitting Record $507M

IndexBox has just published a new report: 'EU - Dates - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights'. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2021, approx. 175K tons of dates were imported in the EU, picking up by 7.3% on 2020 figures. In value terms, purchases expanded from $456M to $507M.

France (47K tons), distantly followed by Germany (28K tons), Italy (23K tons), the Netherlands (20K tons), Spain (14K tons) and Belgium (8.6K tons) were the key importers of dates, together committing 80% of total volume. The following importers - Denmark (4.9K tons) and Poland (4.9K tons) - each accounted for a 5.6% share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest date importing markets in the EU were France ($116M), Germany ($90M) and the Netherlands ($72M), with a combined 55% share of total supplies. These countries were followed by Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Poland, which accounted for a further 30%. Among the leading importers, Italy (+72.4% per year) saw the highest growth rate of purchases in 2021.

Date Import Prices in the EU

The date import price in the EU amounted to $2,890 per ton in 2021, rising by 3.6% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination. The country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($3,619 per ton), while Poland ($1,903 per ton) was amongst the lowest. In 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Largest Date Suppliers in the EU

The Netherlands (14K tons) and France (12K tons) represented roughly 54% of total exports of dates in 2021. It was distantly followed by Germany (6.8K tons), Italy (3.3K tons), Belgium (2.9K tons) and Denmark (2.6K tons), together constituting a 33% share of total volume. Spain (1.8K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest date supplying countries in the EU were the Netherlands ($73M), France ($36M) and Germany ($26M), with a combined 68% share of total exports. Denmark, Belgium, Italy and Spain lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 23%.
