Germany's Ethylene Market Totaled $1B, Despite a 10% Drop in Domestic Output in 2018

The revenue of the ethylene market in Germany amounted to $1B in 2018, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price).
Production in Germany
Ethylene production in Germany totaled 2.5M tonnes in 2018, falling by -10.5% against the previous year. In general, ethylene production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of 13% y-o-y. In that year, ethylene production attained its peak volume of 3.1M tonnes. From 2011 to 2018, ethylene production growth remained at a lower figure.
Imports into Germany
In 2018, the ethylene imports into Germany totaled 644K tonnes, increasing by 11% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2009 to 2018; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 783K tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2018, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ethylene imports stood at $733M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. Overall, the total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2009 to 2018: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 with an increase of 67% year-to-year. Over the period under review, ethylene imports reached their maximum at $894M in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (230K tonnes), the UK (134K tonnes) and Belgium (77K tonnes) were the main suppliers of ethylene imports to Germany, together accounting for 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by Norway, Austria, Libya and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 23%.
From 2009 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Libya, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($239M), the UK ($160M) and Belgium ($82M) were the largest ethylene suppliers to Germany, with a combined 66% share of total imports. Norway, Austria, Libya and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2018, the average ethylene import price amounted to $1,138 per tonne, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price indicated measured growth from 2009 to 2018: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, ethylene import price increased by +35.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average import prices for ethylene attained their maximum at $1,489 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2018, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($1,268 per tonne), while the price for Austria ($744 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2009 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
