Diammonium Phosphate Prices Surge by 50% on High Freight Rates and China’s Curbing Exports

Since the beginning of 2021, the average global price for diammonium phosphate (DAP) soared by +53%, reaching $644 per tonne in September. High freight rates and energy costs became the main reasons for this spike. Announced suspension of exports from China's major fertilizer producers could drive further price increases. China represents the largest DAP exporter worldwide, accounting for 34% of the global export volume. Last year, China sharply reduced DAP exports to India and Pakistan, while the shipment to Vietnam spiked by +16.5% y-o-y in physical terms.
Diammonium Phosphate Price Trend
According to World Bank's data, the average global price for diammonium phosphate jumped from $421 per tonne in January 2021 to $644 per tonne in September 2021. High freight rates and energy costs became the main reasons for this spike. Expected suspension of exports from China could stimulate further price increase. Several companies, such as Sinofert Holdings Ltd, Sino-Agri Group, China National Coal Group and China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), announced their plans to reduce exports to assure supplies in the domestic market. China remains the world's leading DAP supplier, accounting for 34% of the global export volume.
China's Diammonium Phosphate Exports by Country
In 2020, exports of diammonium phosphate (DAP) from China shrank to 5.7M tonnes, waning by -11.5% on the year before. In value terms, diammonium phosphate exports reduced from $2.3B in 2019 to $1.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
India (1.8M tonnes) was the leading destination for diammonium phosphate exports from China, with a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, diammonium phosphate exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Pakistan (746K tonnes), twofold. Vietnam (574K tonnes) ranked third in total exports with a 10% share.
In 2020, the volume of supplies to India fell by -29.5% y-o-y. Exports to Pakistan recorded a slump of -13.2% y-o-y, while supplies to Vietnam soared by +16.5% y-o-y.
In value terms, India ($548M) remains the key foreign market for diammonium phosphate exports from China, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Pakistan ($240M), with a 13% share of total exports, followed by Vietnam, with a 10% share.
