American Imports of Cucumbers and Gherkins Hit Record Highs

In 2020, American imports of cucumbers and gherkins achieved a record $958M due to rising consumer demand. In physical terms, the import volume also grew by 2% y-o-y to 995K tonnes. Mexico buoys near 80% of the imported cucumbers and gherkins, leaving a small room for producers from Canada and Honduras. These countries feature double-digit growth of suppliers to the American market, while imports from Mexico expand at a slightly slower pace.
Cucumber and Gherkin Imports into the U.S.
For the ninth year in a row, the U.S. recorded growth in overseas purchases of cucumbers and gherkins, which increased by 2% to 995K tonnes in 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2020. In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports stood at $958M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
In 2020, Mexico (789K tonnes) constituted the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier to the U.S., with a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (163K tonnes), fivefold.
Over the last year, the average annual growth rate of value from Mexico stood at +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+19.1% per year) and Honduras (+20.8% per year).
In value terms, Mexico ($628M) constituted the largest supplier of cucumber and gherkin to the U.S., comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($302M), with a 32% share of total imports.
The average cucumber and gherkin import price stood at $963 per tonne in 2020, with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. Over the last eight years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%.
