Crispbread Market in the EU - Key Insights

The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when the market value increased by 16% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the crispbread market reached its peak figure level at $531M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, consumption failed to regain its momentum.

Production in the EU

In 2017, approx. 222K tonnes of crispbread were produced in the European Union; increasing by 9.6% against the previous year. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations over the period under review.

In 2017, approx. 130K tonnes of crispbread were exported in the European Union; increasing by 8.8% against the previous year. The crispbread exports continue to indicate a strong growth.

In value terms, crispbread exports amounted to $358M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The total exports indicated a prominent growth from 2007 to 2017: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2017 figures, the crispbread exports increased by +104.2% against 2009 indices. Over the period under review, crispbread exports reached their peak figure in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2017, Ireland (46K tonnes), distantly followed by Germany (30K tonnes), Sweden (24K tonnes), Italy (9.6K tonnes) and the UK (8.2K tonnes) were the main exporters of crispbread, together mixed up 90% of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (2.5K tonnes) and Finland (2.4K tonnes) each finished at a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ireland (+28.5% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest crispbread markets worldwide were Ireland ($97M), Germany ($91M) and Sweden ($60M), with a combined 69% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2017, the crispbread export price in the European Union amounted to $2.7 per kg, stabilizing at the previous year. The the crispbread export price continues to indicate a mild increase.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was Italy ($3.8 per kg), while Ireland ($2.1 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Ireland (+11.4% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Crispbread Imports

Imports in the EU

In 2017, the amount of crispbread imported in the European Union amounted to 86K tonnes, going up by 3.5% against the previous year. The total imports indicated a conspicuous growth from 2007 to 2017: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2017 figures, the crispbread imports decreased by -3.9% against 2015 indices.

In value terms, crispbread imports amounted to $235M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The total imports indicated a strong growth from 2007 to 2017: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2017 figures, the crispbread imports increased by +60.0% against 2010 indices. Over the period under review, crispbread imports reached their maximum in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2017, the UK (21K tonnes), distantly followed by the Netherlands (9.1K tonnes), France (8.5K tonnes), Germany (7.6K tonnes), Sweden (7.5K tonnes), Italy (5.9K tonnes) and Denmark (5.5K tonnes) represented the main importers of crispbread, together constituting 76% of total imports. The following importers - Ireland (2.9K tonnes), Spain (2.9K tonnes), Belgium (2.5K tonnes), Poland (2.4K tonnes) and Finland (2.3K tonnes) each reached a 15% share of total imports.

The UK was also the fastest growing in terms of the crispbread imports, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, Belgium (+11.0%), Finland (+8.9%), Spain (+5.5%), Denmark (+3.9%), France (+3.2%), Ireland (+2.6%) and the Netherlands (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.8%), Italy (-2.4%) and Poland (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (1.9%) and Germany (1.8%) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2007-2017, the share of Finland (-1.5%), the Netherlands (-1.8%), Belgium (-1.9%), Denmark (-2%), France (-2.7%) and the UK (-19.8%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the UK ($40M), France ($29M) and the Netherlands ($24M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, with a combined 40% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The crispbread import price in the European Union stood at $2.7 per kg in 2017, picking up by 2% against the previous year. The the crispbread import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Finland ($4.3 per kg), while the UK ($1.9 per kg) was amongst the lowest.
