In May 2022, the cotton lint price per ton amounted to $2,718 (FOB, US), increasing by 5.5% against the previous month. Over the period from Jan 2022 to May 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In May 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices to India ($3,403 per ton) and Bangladesh ($2,946 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($2,540 per ton) and Pakistan ($2,544 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Cotton Lint Exports
In May 2022, exports of cotton lint from the United States was estimated at 412K tons, approximately mirroring Apr 2022. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +7.7% from Jan 2022 to May 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 when exports increased by 19% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 424K tons. From Apr 2022 to May 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton lint exports rose sharply to $1.1B (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +10.6% from Jan 2022 to May 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Mar 2022 with an increase of 21% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in May 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
U.S. Cotton Lint Exports by Country
China (136K tons) was the main destination for cotton lint exports from the United States, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton lint exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (65K tons), twofold. Vietnam (52K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to China totaled +3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Turkey (+33.4% per month) and Vietnam (+2.1% per month).
In value terms, China ($360M) remains the key foreign market for cotton lint exports from the United States, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Turkey ($165M), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 12% share.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to China totaled +6.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Turkey (+35.6% per month) and Vietnam (+3.2% per month).
