U.S. Cotton Lint Export Price per Ton June 2022
In June 2022, the cotton lint price per ton stood at $2,761 (FOB, US) in June 2022, surging by 1.6% against the previous month. Over the last five-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when the average export price increased by 5.5% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in June 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In June 2022, the countries with the highest prices were India ($3,254 per ton) and Bangladesh ($2,850 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($2,572 per ton) and China ($2,607 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Cotton Lint Exports
Cotton lint exports from the United States dropped to 370K tons in June 2022, which is down by -10.3% on the month before. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.8% over the period from January 2022 to June 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 19% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 424K tons. From April 2022 to June 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton lint exports reduced to $1B (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.4% from January 2022 to June 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 21% against the previous month. The exports peaked at $1.1B in May 2022, and then dropped in the following month.
U.S. Cotton Lint Exports by Country
China (106K tons), Turkey (59K tons) and Vietnam (49K tons) were the main destinations of cotton lint exports from the United States, together comprising 58% of total exports. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the biggest increases were in India (with a CAGR of +38.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($277M), Turkey ($151M) and Vietnam ($139M) appeared to be the largest markets for cotton lint exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 55% of total exports. These countries were followed by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 28%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, India, with a CAGR of +35.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
