EU Copper Sanitary Ware Market - Germany and Italy Continue to Suffer from Negative Export Growth

The countries with the highest volumes of copper sanitary ware production in 2018 were Germany (1.3K tonnes), Italy (782 tonnes) and France (277 tonnes), together accounting for 76% of total production.

Exports in the EU

In 2018, approx. 7.3K tonnes of sanitary ware and parts of copper were exported in the European Union; lowering by -27.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, copper sanitary ware exports continue to indicate a deep drop. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 with an increase of 5.4% y-o-y. Over the period under review, copper sanitary ware exports reached their maximum at 12K tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, copper sanitary ware exports totaled $183M in 2018. Overall, copper sanitary ware exports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 15% y-o-y. Over the period under review, copper sanitary ware exports attained their maximum at $287M in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (2.7K tonnes) and Italy (2K tonnes) were the largest exporters of sanitary ware and parts of copper in 2018, finishing at near 37% and 28% of total exports, respectively. The UK (511 tonnes) held a 7% share (based on tonnes) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (5.1%). Poland (259 tonnes), Spain (234 tonnes), France (205 tonnes), the Czech Republic (152 tonnes), Denmark (136 tonnes), Portugal (133 tonnes) and Belgium (127 tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Denmark, while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Germany ($86M) remains the largest copper sanitary ware supplier in the European Union, comprising 47% of total copper sanitary ware exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Italy ($39M), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 5.4% share.

In Germany, copper sanitary ware exports declined by an average annual rate of -2.3% over the period from 2007-2018. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (-4.7% per year) and the UK (-3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2018, the copper sanitary ware export price in the European Union amounted to $25 per kg, going up by 14% against the previous year. Over the last eleven-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 15% against the previous year. In that year, the export prices for sanitary ware and parts of copper reached their peak level of $25 per kg. From 2014 to 2018, the growth in terms of the export prices for sanitary ware and parts of copper failed to regain its momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was France ($42 per kg), while Poland ($12 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

The volume of imports peaked at 18K tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, copper sanitary ware imports totaled $262M in 2018. Overall, copper sanitary ware imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, copper sanitary ware imports attained their peak figure at $295M in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2018, the UK (3.6K tonnes) and Germany (3.3K tonnes) were the largest importers of sanitary ware and parts of copper in the European Union, together amounting to approx. 47% of total imports. Italy (1.3K tonnes) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 8.8% share, followed by France (6.6%), the Czech Republic (4.9%) and the Netherlands (4.7%). Austria (513 tonnes), Belgium (513 tonnes), Poland (509 tonnes), Ireland (444 tonnes), Spain (372 tonnes) and Greece (300 tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Czech Republic, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest copper sanitary ware importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($64M), the UK ($56M) and Italy ($27M), with a combined 56% share of total imports.

Germany recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to imports, among the main importing countries over the last eleven years, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The copper sanitary ware import price in the European Union stood at $18 per kg in 2018, picking up by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2018, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import prices for sanitary ware and parts of copper reached their peak figure at $19 per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Austria ($21 per kg), while Greece ($6.3 per kg) was amongst the lowest.
