The chromium ore and concentrate price per ton stood at $459 (CIF, US) in May 2022, surging by 142% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded strong growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($482 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($233 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+33.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In May 2022, approx. 675 tons of chromium ores and concentrates were imported into the United States; declining by -98.4% against Apr 2022. Overall, imports recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Apr 2022 with an increase of 4,770% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 41K tons, and then declined dramatically in the following month.
In value terms, chromium ore and concentrate imports contracted markedly to $310K (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. In general, imports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in Apr 2022 when imports increased by 3,264% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $7.8M, and then contracted sharply in the following month.

In May 2022, South Africa (596 tons) constituted the largest supplier of chromium ore and concentrate to the United States, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, chromium ore and concentrate imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (58 tons), tenfold. From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from South Africa totaled -16.0%.
In value terms, South Africa ($287K) constituted the largest supplier of chromium ore and concentrate to the United States, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($18K), with a 5.7% share of total imports. From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from South Africa amounted to +2.5%.
