China Strengthens Leading Position in Global Electric Lamp Exports

China's Electric Lamp Exports

Electric lamp exports from China soared from 24.2B units in 2019 to 66.8B units in 2020. In value terms, supplies rose rapidly from $7.7B to $8.4B (IndexBox estimates).

The U.S. (14B units) was the leading destination for electric lamp exports from China, accounting for 21% of total supplies. Moreover, electric lamp exports to the U.S. exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Nigeria (4.8B units), threefold. Venezuela (3.4B units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.1% share.

In value terms, the U.S. ($2.4B) remains the key foreign market for electric lamp exports from China, comprising 28% of total supplies. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Vietnam ($232M), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 2.7% share.

In 2020, the annual growth rate in terms of value to the U.S. amounted to +31.0%. Exports to Vietnam grew by +12.8% y/y, while supplies to Canada rose twofold.

The average electric lamp export price stood at $0.1 per unit in 2020, decreasing by -60.5% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Canada, while the average price for exports to Angola was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable growth rate in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
