China's Graphic Paper Imports Robustly Grow While Other Countries Reduce Purchases

Global Graphic Paper Imports
In 2020, approx. 36M tons of graphic papers were imported worldwide; declining by -16.2% against the year before. In value terms, supplies shrank to $30.3B (IndexBox estimates).
The U.S. (4.2M tons) and Germany (3.9M tons) represented the main importers of graphic papersin the world, together resulting at approx. 23% of total volume. China (2.2M tons) occupied the next position in the ranking, followed by France (2.1M tons) and the UK (2M tons). All these countries together occupied near 17% share of total imports. Italy (1.5M tons), India (1.5M tons), Poland (1.2M tons), Singapore (1.1M tons), Turkey (0.9M tons), the Netherlands (0.8M tons), Spain (0.7M tons) and Japan (0.7M tons) held a little share of total volume.
In value terms, the largest graphic papers importing markets worldwide were the U.S. ($3.5B), Germany ($3.1B) and France ($1.8B), together accounting for 28% of global supplies. The UK, China, Italy, Poland, India, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, Japan and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Graphic paper imports into China rose from 1.4M tons in 2019 to 2.2M tons in 2020. In value terms, supplies to China grew from $1.1B to $1.4B. Apart from China and Singapore, most other leading importers have reduced purchases.
The average graphic papers import price stood at $840 per ton in 2020, reducing by -5.3% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Spain ($1,068 per ton), while India ($575 per ton) was amongst the lowest. From 2010 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain, while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
