China's Citrus Fruits Rose in Price Twofold Over Past Decade

China's Citrus Fruit Exports
Citrus fruit exports from China amounted to 950K tonnes in 2020, surging by 1.7% against the previous year's figure. In value terms, supplies skyrocketed to $1.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
Vietnam (296K tonnes) was the main destination for citrus fruit exports from China, with a 31% share of total volume. Moreover, citrus fruit exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (93K tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the Philippines (89K tonnes), with a 9.3% share.
In 2020, the annual growth rate of volume supplied to Vietnam stood at +2.5% y/y. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following growth rates: Thailand (+21.2% y/y) and the Philippines (+6.0% y/y).
In value terms, Vietnam ($546M) remains the key foreign market for citrus fruit exports from China, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Thailand ($166M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 9.2% share.
The average citrus fruit export price stood at $1,482 per tonne in 2020, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated resilient growth from 2010 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% per year over the last decade. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($1,848 per tonne), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($622 per tonne) was amongst the lowest. From 2010 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
