Paper Knife Export in China Surges 33%, Averaging 98M Units in September 2022
China Paper Knife Exports
In September 2022, overseas shipments of paper knives were finally on the rise to reach 98M units after two months of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 79% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 107M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper knife exports skyrocketed to $22M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, exports saw a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when exports increased by 69% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 23M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Indonesia (7.6M units), India (7.3M units) and Brazil (6.1M units) were the main destinations of paper knife exports from China, together comprising 21% of total exports. The United States, Thailand, the Philippines, Colombia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Mexico, Russia and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Malaysia (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($2.1M), Indonesia ($1.5M) and India ($1.5M) constituted the largest markets for paper knife exported from China worldwide, with a combined 23% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Colombia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Iraq, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +11.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In September 2022, the paper knife price amounted to $225 per thousand units (FOB, China), reducing by -2.2% against the previous month. Over the last eight months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 an increase of 9.9% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $230 per thousand units in August 2022, and then reduced in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($399 per thousand units), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($184 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
