China's Envelope Export Declines to $8.6M in Feb 2023

In February 2023, the amount of envelopes exported from China fell significantly to 2.4K tons, shrinking by -41% on the previous month. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 14% against the previous month.
In value terms, envelope exports declined markedly to $8.6M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when exports increased by 40% against the previous month.

Exports by Country
Japan (844 tons), the United States (614 tons) and the UK (112 tons) were the main destinations of envelope exports from China, together accounting for 66% of total exports. Australia, Belgium, Indonesia and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in Indonesia (with a CAGR of +38.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest markets for envelope exported from China were the United States ($2.7M), Japan ($2.1M) and Australia ($630K), together comprising 63% of total exports. Indonesia, the UK, Vietnam and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +37.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the envelope price amounted to $3,591 per ton (FOB, China), which is down by -6.7% against the previous month. Over the period from February 2022 to February 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when the average export price increased by 22% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $4,751 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to February 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($7,735 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($1,172 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
