China's Date Imports Jump 119% to $1.1 Million in February 2023

China Date Imports

After two months of decline, overseas purchases of dates increased by 152% to 2.5K tons in February 2023. Overall, imports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 with an increase of 334% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 5K tons. From December 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, date imports soared to $1.1M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when imports increased by 191% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $2.1M. From December 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (1.3K tons), Saudi Arabia (727 tons) and Iran (468 tons) were the main suppliers of date imports to China, with a combined 100% share of total imports.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +19.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest date suppliers to China were the United Arab Emirates ($552K), Saudi Arabia ($418K) and Iran ($161K), together accounting for 99% of total imports.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +21.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In February 2023, the date price stood at $460 per ton (CIF, China), falling by -13% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 40% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $619 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($575 per ton), while the price for Iran ($343 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
