China's Aluminum Bar Exports Drop to $141M in Feb. 2023

In February 2023, shipments abroad of aluminium bars, rods and profiles decreased by -55.8% to 39K tons for the first time since October 2022, thus ending a three-month rising trend. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 70% against the previous month.
In value terms, aluminium bar exports reduced remarkably to $141M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 68% month-to-month.

Exports by Country
Vietnam (5.5K tons) was the main destination for aluminium bar exports from China, accounting for a 14% share of total exports. Moreover, aluminium bar exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (2.4K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Philippines (2.4K tons), with a 6.3% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Vietnam totaled +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+3.1% per month) and the Philippines (+7.3% per month).
In value terms, Vietnam ($19M) emerged as the key foreign market for aluminium bar exports from China, comprising 13% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($8.4M), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 5.8% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam stood at +3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Australia (-1.0% per month) and Malaysia (+2.0% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the aluminium bar price amounted to $3,631 per ton (FOB, China), remaining stable against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 3.9% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $4,253 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to February 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In February 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Singapore ($4,125 per ton) and the United States ($4,120 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($3,070 per ton) and Israel ($3,160 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
