In 2020, American imports of chillies and peppers increased by +5.7% y-o-y and attained $1.9B. Mexico and Canada remain the major suppliers to the U.S., with a combined share of 91% of the total imports. In 2020, Canada featured the most rapid growth rate in terms of chilli and pepper volumes supplied to the U.S.

In value terms, chilli and pepper imports expanded sharply to $1.9B in 2020. In 2020, approx. 1.2M tonnes of chillies and peppers (green) were imported into the U.S.; picking up by 2.4% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2020.
In 2020, Mexico (1M tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of chilli and pepper to the U.S., with an 84% share of total imports. Moreover, chilli and pepper imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (149K tonnes), sevenfold. In 2020, Mexico increased its supplies to the U.S. by +2.4% y-o-y in terms of volume, while Canada saw a 10.4%-spike in exports to the U.S.
In value terms, Mexico ($1.4B) constituted the largest supplier of chilli and pepper to the U.S., comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($409M), with a 22% share of total imports.
The average chilli and pepper import price stood at $1,586 per tonne in 2020, rising by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the last eight years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Canada ($2,742 per tonne), while the price for Mexico stood at $1,350 per tonne.
