In May 2022, the cheese price per ton amounted to $7,864 (CIF, US), which is down by -6.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Feb 2022 when the average import price increased by 3.2% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $8,446 per ton. From Mar 2022 to May 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($11,821 per ton), while the price for Nicaragua ($4,986 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Cheese Imports
Cheese imports into the United States contracted to 15K tons in May 2022, declining by -5.2% compared with the previous month's figure. In value terms, cheese imports declined to $118M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0% over the period from Jan 2022 to May 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 with an increase of 43% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $135M. From Apr 2022 to May 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Cheese Imports by Country
Italy (2.9K tons), the Netherlands (1.5K tons) and France (1.3K tons) were the main suppliers of cheese imports to The United States, together accounting for 38% of total imports.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +26.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($35M) constituted the largest supplier of cheese to The United States, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($10M), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by The Netherlands, with a 7.9% share.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Italy was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: France (-10.9% per month) and The Netherlands (+24.7% per month).
