The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2017 figures, the carpet exports increased by +29.9% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, carpet exports reached their peak figure in 2017, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

In value terms, carpet exports amounted to $6.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The total exports indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2017: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of exports peaked at $6.7B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2017, Turkey (397K tonnes) and China (289K tonnes) were the main exporters of carpets and other textile floor coverings in the globe, together committing 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (103K tonnes), committing 12% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (+10.6% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carpet markets worldwide were Turkey ($2.1B), China ($1.8B) and India ($1.4B), together comprising 86% of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2017, the carpet export price in Asia amounted to $7.3 per kg, shrinking by -11.7% against the previous year. The the carpet export price continues to indicate a measured descent.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was India ($14 per kg), while Turkey ($5.4 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by India (+2.9% per year), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2017, imports of carpets and other textile floor coverings in Asia totaled 351K tonnes, going up by 31% against the previous year. The total imports indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2017: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2017 figures, the carpet imports increased by +49.6% against 2013 indices.

In value terms, carpet imports totaled $2.5B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded over the period under review. The level of imports peaked at $2.6B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, imports failed to regain their momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2017, Saudi Arabia (87K tonnes), distantly followed by Iraq (51K tonnes), Japan (51K tonnes) and the United Arab Emirates (16K tonnes) were the major importers of carpets and other textile floor coverings, together constituting 58% of total imports. China (12K tonnes), India (10K tonnes), Kuwait (9.7K tonnes), Israel (9.6K tonnes), Malaysia (9.1K tonnes), South Korea (7.8K tonnes), Thailand (6.8K tonnes) and Turkey (5.8K tonnes) held the mild share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (+22.7% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($460M), Saudi Arabia ($446M) and Iraq ($188M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together accounting for 45% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, China, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Israel, Kuwait, Turkey and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Import Prices by Country

The carpet import price in Asia stood at $7 per kg in 2017, falling by -15.2% against the previous year. The the carpet import price continues to indicate a measured decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the import price increased by 15% year-to-year. The level of import price peaked at $10 per kg in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2017, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was South Korea ($11 per kg), while Iraq ($3.7 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Malaysia (+7.2% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
