Canada's Canary Seed Price Rises 8% to $689 per Ton
Canada Canary Seed Export Price in December 2022
In December 2022, the canary seed price stood at $689 per ton (FOB, Canada), growing by 8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 an increase of 12% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $725 per ton. From October 2022 to December 2022, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In December 2022, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($872 per ton) and Italy ($766 per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($584 per ton) and Colombia ($608 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Canada Canary Seed Exports
In December 2022, shipments abroad of canary seed increased by 1.5% to 19K tons, rising for the second consecutive month after two months of decline. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a measured expansion from January 2022 to December 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% over the last eleven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.3% against October 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 56% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 22K tons in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to December 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canary seed exports rose sharply to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. In general, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from January 2022 to December 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% over the last eleven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.7% against October 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 59% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 14K tons in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to December 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Canada Canary Seed Exports by Country
Mexico (6.5K tons), Belgium (3.3K tons) and Spain (1.2K tons) were the main destinations of canary seed exports from Canada, together comprising 58% of total exports. Colombia, Italy, Turkey, Egypt, the United States, Indonesia, China, Portugal, Tunisia and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +28.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for canary seed exported from Canada were Mexico ($4.4M), Belgium ($2.3M) and Spain ($875K), with a combined 58% share of total exports. Italy, Colombia, Turkey, the United States, Indonesia, Egypt, Portugal, China, Tunisia and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Turkey, with a CAGR of +30.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
