The cabbage price per ton stood at $1,148 (CIF, US) in May 2022, rising by 1.7% against the previous month. Over the last four - month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Apr 2022 an increase of 6.7% m-o-m. The import price peaked in May 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($2,481 per ton), while the price for Canada ($729 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Cabbage Imports
In May 2022, approx. 38K tons of cabbage and other brassicas were imported into the United States; declining by -20.3% compared with Apr 2022. Overall, imports faced a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in Mar 2022 with an increase of 0.9% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 60K tons in Jan 2022; however, from Feb 2022 to May 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cabbage imports fell dramatically to $43M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The smallest decline of -0.4% was in Feb 2022. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $66M in Jan 2022; however, from Feb 2022 to May 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Cabbage Imports by Country
In May 2022, Mexico (35K tons) was the main cabbage supplier to the United States, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, cabbage imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (2.4K tons), more than tenfold.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Mexico totaled -11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Canada (-3.7% per month) and Guatemala (-4.7% per month).
In value terms, Mexico ($40M) constituted the largest supplier of cabbage to the United States, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Guatemala ($1.9M), with a 4.3% share of total imports.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Mexico totaled -10.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Guatemala (-4.8% per month) and Canada (+0.3% per month).
