In value terms, the UK ($7.4M), Singapore ($6.8M) and the Dominican Republic ($6.8M) appeared to be the largest markets for breakfast cereal exported from the U.S. worldwide, together comprising 20% of total exports. Honduras, China, Hong Kong SAR, Bahamas, Panama, Israel, China, the Philippines, Haiti and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Kenya (+247.8% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of exports, over the last five year period, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country


The average breakfast cereal export price stood at $2.1 per kg in 2018, surging by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the breakfast cereal export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest export price was Bahamas ($3.1 per kg), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($323 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (+3.9% per year), while the export prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Breakfast cereal imports into the U.S. stood at 71K tonnes in 2018, rising by 15% against the previous year. Overall, breakfast cereal imports continue to indicate a strong increase.

In value terms, breakfast cereal imports stood at $156M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. In general, the total imports indicated a remarkable expansion from 2013 to 2018: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.7% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, the breakfast cereal imports increased by +73.6% against 2013 indices. Imports peaked in 2018, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

Spain (8.5K tonnes), South Korea (7.9K tonnes) and India (7.2K tonnes) were the main suppliers of breakfast cereal imports to the U.S., together comprising 33% of total imports. Thailand, Turkey, Peru, China, Germany, the Dominican Republic, the UK, France and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Peru (+125.1% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest breakfast cereal suppliers to the U.S. were Spain ($18M), South Korea ($18M) and Thailand ($13M), together comprising 32% of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Germany, France, China, Italy, the UK and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 45%.

Among the main suppliers, Peru (+121.4% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to imports, over the last five year period, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country


The average breakfast cereal import price stood at $2.2 per kg in 2018, dropping by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the breakfast cereal import price continues to indicate a pronounced descent.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest import price was France ($3 per kg), while the price for Turkey ($498 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by India (+2.6% per year), while the import prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
