Sulphur Price in Brazil Soars to $216 per Ton After Two Consecutive Months of Increase
Brazil Sulphur Import Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the sulphur price stood at $216 per ton (CIF, Brazil), picking up by 19% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $502 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Russia ($445 per ton), while the price for the United States ($194 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brazil Sulphur Imports
In February 2023, approximately 198K tons of sulphur were imported into Brazil; reducing by -12.3% against the previous month's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when imports increased by 253% against the previous month.
In value terms, sulphur imports rose slightly to $43M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 with an increase of 134% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $161M. From August 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Brazil Sulphur Imports by Country
Qatar (77K tons), the United States (73K tons) and Saudi Arabia (40K tons) were the main suppliers of sulphur imports to Brazil, with a combined 96% share of total imports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sulphur suppliers to Brazil were Qatar ($17M), the United States ($14M) and Saudi Arabia ($8.8M), together accounting for 93% of total imports.
Qatar, with a CAGR of +26.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
