Soya Bean Price in Brazil Contracts for Two Consecutive Months to $623 per Ton

Brazil Soya Bean Export Price in August 2022

In August 2022, the soya bean price amounted to $623 per ton (FOB, Brazil), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Over the last seven months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 11% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $630 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices to Japan ($657 per ton) and Vietnam ($636 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran ($582 per ton) and Thailand ($608 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brazil Soya Bean Exports

In August 2022, shipments abroad of soya beans decreased by -18.8% to 6.1M tons, falling for the fifth month in a row after three months of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when exports increased by 157% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 12M tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to August 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soya bean exports contracted notably to $3.8B (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when exports increased by 154% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 6.8M tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to August 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Brazil Soya Bean Exports by Country

China (4.5M tons) was the main destination for soya bean exports from Brazil, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, soya bean exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iran (406K tons), more than tenfold. Thailand (128K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.1% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled +12.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Iran (+28.3% per month) and Thailand (+103.5% per month).

In value terms, China ($2.8B) remains the key foreign market for soya bean exports from Brazil, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($236M), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 2.1% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to China amounted to +15.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Iran (+31.3% per month) and Vietnam (+1.8% per month).
