Brazil's Oil Crops Exports Hit Record $28B with Rising Supplies to Asia and Europe

Brazil's Oil Crop Exports
In 2020, approx. 83M tons of oil crops were exported from Brazil, with an increase of 12% compared with 2019 figures. In value terms, supplies rose from $26.1B to $28.6B (IndexBox estimates).
China (61M tons) was the main destination for oil crop exports from Brazil, accounting for a 73% share of total supplies. Moreover, oil crop exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (3.3M tons), more than tenfold. Spain (2.8M tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.4% share.
In value terms, China ($20.9B) remains the key foreign market for oil crop exports from Brazil, comprising 73% of total supplies. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the Netherlands ($1.1B), with a 3.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3.3% share.
In 2020, the annual growth rate of value to China stood at +2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+83.5% per year) and Spain (+26.4% per year).
In 2020, the average oil crop export price amounted to $345 per ton, which is down by -2.1% against the previous year. Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the highest prices were recorded for prices to Thailand ($346 per ton) and China ($345 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($339 per ton) and Turkey ($340 per ton) were amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
