In 2016, the MDF market in the U.S. reached 4,345 thousand cubic meters,  approx. 3% more than the year before. There was a pronounced growth from 2011 to 2016, after a sharp decline by 20% in 2010. In value terms, the exports decreased to 1,994 million USD in 2016: it fell abruptly after four years of steady growth (IndexBox estimates).

The U.S. plywood market totalled 13.1M cubic metres in 2017, a decline of 3.1M cubic metres (or 19%) against the outset level. In wholesale prices, the market totaled $5.7B in 2017, remaining relatively stable against the previous year.

In 2016, the global imports of fiberboard amounted to 17M tonnes, coming up by 4% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, fiberboard imports increased by +32.5% against its level of 2008. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when it surged by 34% against the previous year level.

Global veneer sheet exports stood at 1.5M tonnes in 2016, surging by 8% against the previous year figure. Overall, veneer sheet exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when it surged by 30% year-to-year. In that year, global veneer sheet exports attained its maximum volume of 1.7M tonnes. From 2012 to 2016, growth of global veneer sheet exports failed to regain its strength. In value terms, veneer sheet exports totaled $2.4B in 2016. In general, veneer sheet exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. Global veneer sheet export peaked of $3.6B in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Overall, it indicated a prominent increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, particle board exports increased by +34.1% against its level of 2008. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when export increased by 37% from the previous year level.

After a decline by 10% in 2009, the market recorded a robust upward trend over the next five years, until it dropped slightly in 2015 and then flattened.

From 2007 to 2015, global wood-based panel market showed mixed dynamics. A significant drop in 2008-2009 was followed by a gradual increase. In 2015, the wood-based panel market grew to 380,411 thousand cubic meters. The market value showed similar dynamics every year, except for 2015, when the global wood-based panel market value decreased to 155,447 million USD. This was 8% lower than the year before.
