The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when import increased by 13% from the previous year level.

In 2016, approx. 4.7M tonnes of pump were exported worldwide; rising by 15% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when exports increased by 22% year-to-year. Global pump export peaked of 4.7M tonnes in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2016. In value terms, pump exports stood at $67B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, global pump exports attained its maximum level of $76B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

The U.S. dominates in global imports of pumps and pumping equipment, accounting for a 17% share (based on USD). It was followed by China (7.2%), Germany (6.8%), and Canada (5.1%). In 2015, U.S. pump and pumping equipment imports totaled 7,855 million USD, which was 849 million USD (10%) less than the year before.

Germany continued to dominate the global trade of air or vacuum pumps and air or other gas compressors. In 2014, Germany exported 225 million units of air or vacuum pumps and air or other gas compressors totaling 6,430 million USD, 6% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 15% of its total air or vacuum pumps and air or other gas compressors exports in value terms, accounting for 28% of China's total imports.
