Global pasta and couscous exports amounted to 6.1M tonnes in 2016, ascending by 5% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when it surged by 9% y-o-y. Global pasta and couscous export peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future. In value terms, pasta and couscous exports totaled $8.5B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Global pasta and couscous export peaked of $9.3B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

The U.S. leads the way in global imports on the dry pasta and flour mix market, accounting for a 13% share (based on USD). It is followed by Germany (10%) and Canada (7%).

From 2007 to 2014, EU stuffed pasta and couscous production showed a steady decrease, falling from 2,048 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 1,677 thousand tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -2.8% over the period under review. In value terms, EU stuffed pasta and couscous production was 4,125 million EUR in 2014, growing by +0.4% annually.

Italy continued its dominance in the global uncooked pasta trade. In 2014, Italy exported 1,846.8 kt of uncooked pasta totaling $2,320.9M, 2.5% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany, where it supplied 17.1% of its total uncooked pasta exports in value terms, accounting for 84.7% of Germany's total imports.
