In 2016, the Vietnamese fruit market totalled $8,102M in wholesale prices, thereby falling slightly against the previous year. This figure reflects the total producer and importer revenue (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers’ margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In physical terms, fruit consumption in Viet Nam totaled 6.9M tonnes, decreasing by 5% against the year before. The reduction in consumption was caused by soaring exports, made feasible as a result of the implementation of the China-ASEAN free trade agreements, causing the removal of imports duties and other barriers. Production could not increase at such a pace, therefore, a proportion of the fruit was redirected for export.
