Austria's Wooden Joinery Exports Surpass Record $1.6B

The demand for Austrian products in the global wooden joinery market is gaining momentum. In Q1-Q3 2021, Austria exported 863K tonnes of wooden carpentry worth 1.6B, setting a new record. Compared to the same period in 2020, its supplies grew by 15% in physical terms and 49% in monetary terms. Increased sales to Italy, Germany, and France shaped the most significant impact on the total value growth. Among the top ten buyers, the U.S. recorded the most prominent spike in purchases of wooden joinery from Austria, boosting imports from $11M to $28M over the period under review.
Austria's Wood Joinery Exports by Country
In Q1-Q3 2021, Austria exported 863K tonnes of wooden carpentry, a 15%-increased compared to the same period of the previous year. In monetary terms, supplies expanded by 49%, reaching 1.6B. The major trade partners posted the following gains in the total value and growth rate of purchases against the same period of 2020: Germany ($507M; +34%), Italy ($401M; +82%), Switzerland ($167; +27%), France (118M; +56%). Exports to the U.S. grew more than twofold from $11M to $28M.
In 2020, approx. 991K tonnes of builders' joinery and carpentry of wood were exported from Austria, with an increase of 4.1% against the year before. In value terms, supplies rose by +3.8% to $1.5B.
In that year, Italy (278K tonnes), Germany (275K tonnes) and Switzerland (89K tonnes) were the main destinations of wooden joinery and carpentry exports from Austria, with a combined 65% share of total exports. France, Japan, Spain and the U.K. lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 19%.
In value terms, the largest markets for wooden joinery and carpentry exported from Austria were Germany ($514M), Italy ($305M) and Switzerland ($176M), with a combined 67% share of total supplies. In 2020, Germany (+11.0%) recorded the highest growth rate of purchases in value, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average wooden joinery and carpentry export price stood at $1,506 per tonne in 2020, remaining relatively stable against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($1,968 per tonne), while the average price for exports to Japan ($917 per tonne) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable growth rate in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France, while the prices for the other significant destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
