Moreover, sheep and goat meat consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (824K tonnes), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Pakistan (758K tonnes), with a 9.2% share.
From 2010 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+0.9% per year) and Pakistan (+6.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($44.2B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Pakistan ($5B). It was followed by India.
In 2020, the highest levels of sheep and goat meat per capita consumption was registered in Australia (12 kg per person), followed by Pakistan (3.63 kg per person), China (3.62 kg per person) and Myanmar (2.91 kg per person), while the world average per capita consumption of sheep and goat meat was estimated at 1.93 kg per person.
Market Forecast to 2030
Driven by increasing demand for sheep and goat meat in Asia-Pacific, the market is expected to continue an upward consumption trend over the next decade. Market performance is forecast to decelerate, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +1.6% for the period from 2020 to 2030, which is projected to bring the market volume to 9.7M tonnes by the end of 2030.
