Artichoke Market in the EU - Key Insights

Production in the EU

The artichoke production amounted to 663K tonnes in 2017, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2017; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations over the period under review.

Exports in the EU

In 2017, artichoke exports in the European Union stood at 31K tonnes, picking up by 14% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2017; the trend pattern remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, artichoke exports amounted to $49M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. 

Exports by Country

The exports of the three major exporters of artichokes, namely Spain, France and Italy, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The following exporters - Belgium (1.4K tonnes) and the Netherlands (1.2K tonnes) each amounted to a 8.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Belgium (+17.2% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($16M), France ($15M) and Italy ($9.1M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2017, with a combined 82% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2017, the artichoke export price in the European Union amounted to $1.6 per kg, picking up by 3.2% against the previous year. The the artichoke export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was the Netherlands ($3.2 per kg), while Italy ($1.4 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Belgium (+17.7% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Artichoke Imports
Imports in the EU

The imports totaled 42K tonnes in 2017, surging by 20% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2017; withthe trend pattern remaining consistent throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, artichoke imports stood at $65M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. 

Italy (16K tonnes) and France (14K tonnes) represented the largest importers of artichokes in 2017, amounting to near 37% and 34% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Belgium (4.9K tonnes) and Germany (3K tonnes), together mixed up 19% share of total imports. The Netherlands (1.1K tonnes), Finland (929 tonnes) and the UK (673 tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Belgium (+24.4% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest artichoke markets worldwide were France ($21M), Italy ($19M) and Belgium ($11M), with a combined 78% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The artichoke import price in the European Union stood at $1.6 per kg in 2017, increasing by 1.9% against the previous year. The the artichoke import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was the UK ($2.4 per kg), while Finland ($1 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Belgium (+5.0% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
