Argon Market in the EU - Key Insights

The revenue of the argon market in the European Union amounted to $632M in 2017, jumping by 30% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The argon consumption continues to indicate a temperate contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017, when the market value increased by 30% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the argon market attained its peak figure level at $859M in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2017, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production in the EU


The argon production totaled 1.1B cubic meters in 2017, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. The argon production continues to indicate a significant drop. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, with an increase of 16% y-o-y. Over the period under review, argon production attained its maximum volume at 1.5B cubic meters in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2017, production remained at a lower figure.

Argon Exports


Exports in the EU


The exports stood at 197M cubic meters in 2017, going down by -18.5% against the previous year. The argon exports continue to indicate a moderate descent.

In value terms, argon exports stood at $119M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The argon exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In that year, argon exports reached their peak of $147M. From 2009 to 2017, the growth of argon exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country


In 2017, Germany (65M cubic meters), distantly followed by the Netherlands (38M cubic meters), Belgium (23M cubic meters), the Czech Republic (13M cubic meters) and Austria (9M cubic meters) represented the largest exporters of argon, together mixed up 75% of total exports. The UK (8.4M cubic meters), Poland (6M cubic meters), Finland (4.7M cubic meters), Spain (4.3M cubic meters), Romania (3.8M cubic meters), Sweden (3.6M cubic meters) and France (3.4M cubic meters) occupied the slight share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Romania (+42.4% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($29M), Belgium ($24M) and the Netherlands ($17M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2017, together comprising 59% of total exports. Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, the UK, Poland, Finland, Romania and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Export Prices by Country


The argon export price in the European Union stood at $606 per thousand cubic meters in 2017, surging by 32% against the previous year. The export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2007 to 2017: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was France ($1.4 per cubic meter), while the UK ($351 per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Belgium (+13.2% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Argon Imports


Imports in the EU


In 2017, imports of argon in the European Union totaled 196M cubic meters, waning by -9.8% against the previous year. The argon imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback.

In value terms, argon imports totaled $102M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The argon imports continue to indicate a moderate descent. Over the period under review, argon imports attained their maximum at $144M in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2017, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country


The imports of the twelve major importers of argon, namely Italy, the UK, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Hungary, Denmark, Slovenia and Slovakia, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Hungary (+15.4% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest argon markets worldwide were Italy ($13M), France ($11M) and Belgium ($7.4M), together accounting for 31% of total imports. These countries were followed by the UK, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Slovenia and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 42%.

Import Prices by Country


In 2017, the argon import price in the European Union amounted to $519 per thousand cubic meters, going up by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was France ($1 per cubic meter), while the UK ($366 per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by the Netherlands (+8.1% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
