IndexBox has just published a new report "Argentina: Cottonseed – Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report’s key findings.

Argentinian Cottonseed Consumption Have Fluctuated Wildly

The cottonseed market in Argentina is characterized by strong fluctuations in consumption volumes, which are due to the unstable supply of the product. With cotton seeds are usually being the by-product of the production of cotton fibre, the volume of supply fluctuates under the influence of an unstable level of cotton yields due to dry seasons and reduction in cotton acreage.

Anyway, in 2016, Argentinian cottonseed market stood at 289K tonnes in 2016, which was 77K tonnes (or -21%) less than previous year (IndexBox estimates). In addtition, imports was negligible, pointing to the Argentinian market's lack of dependence on the conditions present on the global market.

Market Is Forecast to Grow to 319K Tonnes from 2018 to 2025

Given the favourable climate conditions for growing cotton, Argentina source that raw material for its sizeable textile industry. This is the main reason behind the continued cotton seed production, however, the production trend pattern will remain unstable and will depend on the development of the cotton industry. Cottonseed is used both for the production of cottonseed oil, which is used in food, cosmetics, and agriculture, and can also be forwarded to further sowing. Therefore, overall, consumption is expected to grow at a moderate pace over the next nine years, leading to an average consumption level of 319K tonnes within 2018 and 2025.

Cottonseed Fluctuated under the Influence of Changes in the Yield of Cotton

Cottonseed production in Argentina stood at 355K tonnes in 2016. It fluctuated noticably over the last nine years due to adverse weather conditions which caused cotton yield decline. The highest level of production was at 568K tonnes achieved in 2011, right before a period of severe drought and anomalously high temperatures. In value terms, the output accounted for $113M in 2016.

Argentina remains a net exporter of cottonseed Over the period under review, Argentina was a net exporter of cottonseed. In physical and value terms, exports consistently exceeded imports from 2007 to 2016. In 2016, net exports amounted to 65.3K tonnes. In the medium term, no significant reduction is projected regarding the disparities in the export and import figures for cottonseed.

It was followed by the U.S. (9%), Saudi Arabia (7%), Chile (6%), Spain (6%), Japan (5%) and the UAE (2%). These countries occupied 97% of total Argentine cottonseed exports.

Paraguay Was the Only Supplier of Cottonseed to Argentina
