Acetic Acid Market in the EU - Key Insights

The revenue of the acetic acid market in the European Union amounted to $534M in 2018, surging by 44% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, acetic acid consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018, when it surged by 44% against the previous year. The level of acetic acid consumption peaked at $730M in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, consumption failed to regain its momentum.

Production in the EU


In 2018, production of acetic acid in the European Union totaled 559K tonnes, standing approx. at the previous year.

Exports in the EU


In 2018, the amount of acetic acid exported in the European Union totaled 1.4M tonnes, growing by 2.8% against the previous year. The total exports indicated a remarkable growth from 2008 to 2018: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, the acetic acid exports increased by +5.2% against 2013 indices.

In value terms, acetic acid exports stood at $825M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018.

Exports by Country


Belgium (750K tonnes) and the UK (530K tonnes) dominates acetic acid exports structure, together constituting 91% of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (33K tonnes), Germany (22K tonnes) and Austria (22K tonnes) each finished at a 5.5% share of total exports.

From 2008 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Germany, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($456M), the UK ($278M) and Germany ($25M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2018, together accounting for 92% of total exports.

Export Prices by Country


In 2018, the acetic acid export price in the European Union amounted to $585 per tonne, growing by 26% against the previous year. In general, the acetic acid export price, however, continues to indicate a moderate drop. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018, when the export price increased by 26% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the export prices for acetic acid attained their maximum at $784 per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, export prices failed to regain their momentum.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2018, the country with the highest export price was Germany ($1,102 per tonne), while the Netherlands ($361 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2008 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Austria, while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU


In 2018, acetic acid imports in the European Union totaled 1.7M tonnes, increasing by 6.5% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2008 to 2018; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded over the period under review.

In value terms, acetic acid imports totaled $954M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. Over the last decade, acetic acid imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of imports peaked at $999M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, imports failed to regain their momentum.

Imports by Country


Belgium was the largest importer of acetic acid in the European Union, with the volume of imports resulting at 866K tonnes, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2018. Germany (483K tonnes) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Netherlands (120K tonnes). All these countries together took near 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Poland (66K tonnes), Spain (47K tonnes), Italy (39K tonnes) and France (35K tonnes) together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2008 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Poland, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($406M), Germany ($279M) and the Netherlands ($78M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2018, with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Spain, Italy and France, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Import Prices by Country


The acetic acid import price in the European Union stood at $552 per tonne in 2018, rising by 30% against the previous year. In general, the acetic acid import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2018, the country with the highest import price was France ($801 per tonne), while Belgium ($469 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2008 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Italy, while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
