U.S. Household Laundry Equipment Imports Grew Steadily from 2007 to 2015, with China Becoming the Leading Supplier in the Recent Years

The U.S. prevails in global imports of household laundry equipment, with a 15% share (based on USD). It was distantly followed by Germany (8%), the UK (6%) and Japan (6%). In 2015, U.S. household laundry equipment imports totaled 3,265 million USD, which was 263 million USD (9%) more than the year before.

From 2007 to 2015, U.S. household laundry equipment imports showed steady growth, except only the outstanding peak of 2010, after which the gradual upward trend continued. There was an annual increase of +4.0% throughout the analysed period.

Despite an economic turbulence in 2009, there was no decline of imports in value terms caused by the financial crisis. In 2015, U.S. household laundry equipment imports reached the peak level over the period under review.

The U.S. continues to be one of the biggest markets for global exporters, due to steadily growing import dynamics and strong recovery of housing starts. China was the main supplier of household laundry equipment into the U.S., with a 42% share of total U.S. imports in 2015. It was distantly followed by Mexico (27%), Korea (19%) and Germany (4%). Moreover, China (+34.0% per year) and Mexico (+15.4% per year) were the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2015. China significantly strengthened its position in U.S. imports, from 6% in 2007 to 42% in 2015. Mexico increased its share from 12% to 27% over this period. By contrast, Germany saw its share reduced dramatically from 25% to 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, the U.S. was a net importer of household laundry equipment. Moreover, imports grew faster than exports on average over the period under review. Following outpacing import growth, the U.S. trade deficit in this sector increased, growing steadily from 1,190 million USD in 2007 to 2,356 million USD in 2014.
