The U.S. dominates in the global wood pellet trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 4,108 thousand tonnes on the wood pellet market totaling 555 million USD, 39.4% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the United Kingdom, where it supplied 69.4% of its total wood pellet exports in value terms, accounting for 61.2% of the United Kingdom total imports.

Overall, the global wood pellet trade reached to 3,387 million USD, with a CAGR of 21.7% from 2012 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed steady growth, rising from 16,085 thousand tonnes in 2012 to 21,801 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, the United Kingdom (25.0%), Italy (15.1%), Denmark (11.6%), the Republic of Korea (9.6%) and Germany (6.7%) were the leading destinations of wood pellet imports, together making up 68.0% of global imports. The share of the United Kingdom increased significantly (+13 percentage points), while the share of Denmark illustrated negative dynamics (-4 percentage points).

The U.S. and Canada were among the other main global suppliers of wood pellets in 2014 with a combined share of 25.5% of global exports. The fastest growing exporters from 2012 to 2014 were Poland (+55.6% per year) and the U.S. (+40.5% per year). The U.S. significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 12% in 2012 to 16% in 2014.
