Whey Market - The U.S. Remains the Global Leader in Whey Exports

The U.S. dominates in the global whey trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 479 thousand tonnes of whey totaling 814 million USD, 2% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner on the global whey market was China, where it supplied 31% of its total whey exports in value terms, accounting for 32% of China's total imports.

Overall, the global whey trade reached 4,368 million USD, with a CAGR of 4% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it increased from 2,581 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 3,358 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, China (17%), the Netherlands (16%), Germany (7%), France (6%) and Indonesia (5%) were the leading destinations of whey imports, together making up 51% of global imports. The share of China increased (+7 percentage points), while the share of the Netherlands illustrated negative dynamics (-6 percentage points).

Germany and France were among the other main global suppliers of whey in 2014 with a combined share of 30% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Argentina (+14% per year) and Italy (+13% per year). Italy strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 2% in 2007 to 5% in 2014. The shares of the other countries were stable or demonstrated negative dynamics.
