Ferrosilicon Market - The New Merged Elkem Company to Become One of the Strongest Players in the Global Silicone Industry
This year, Norway-based Elkem, one of the global leaders on the ferrosilicon market, made public its merging with Bluestar Silicones International (BSI).
This partnership will allow these two major players to step forward in the industry, positioning these newly merged companies into a single cost-effective one with projected growth in all business scopes.
While the new management team will be integrated from both Elkem and BSI, the company will be led by CEO Helge Aasen. Although the company's name will be Elkem, all registered trademarks will not undergo any changes.
The newly merged Elkem company, with revenues of 1.6 billion EUR, is expected to become one of the strongest players in the global silicone industry, with potential for growth on both new and long-established markets.
Overall, Norway held the second spot in the global ferro-silicon trade. In 2014, Norway exported 270 thousand tonnes of ferro-silicon totaling 440 million USD, 9% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the Netherlands, where it supplied 24% of its total ferro-silicon exports in value terms, accounting for 92% of the Netherlands's total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Norway was a net exporter of ferro-silicon. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced.
China and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of ferro-silicon in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Macedonia (+16.5% per year) and Ukraine (+14.7% per year). Still, it was Norway that was able to significantly strengthen its position in the global export structure.
Norway's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Finland and the United Kingdom, with a combined 77.7% share of Norway's ferro-silicon exports. The share of the Netherlands increased significantly (+19.2 percentage points), while the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-17.2 percentage points).
