Avocado Market - Mexico’s Avocado Exports Surged 27% in 2014

Mexico seized control of the global avocado market. In 2014, Mexico exported 649 thousand tonnes of avocado totaling 1,401 million USD, 27% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S., where it supplied 80% of its total avocado exports in value terms, accounting for 73% of the U.S. total imports.

Overall, the global avocado trade reached 3,010 million USD, with a CAGR of 13% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed steady growth, rising from 767 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 1,404 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, the U.S. was the leading destination of avocado imports (46%). It was followed by the Netherlands (9%), France (8%), Japan (5%) and Canada (5%). These top five leading destinations of avocado imports together made up 73% of global imports. The share of the Netherlands increased (+2 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-7 percentage points).

Peru and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of avocado in 2014 with a combined share of 20% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Peru (+31% per year) and the U.S. (+31% per year). Peru strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 4% in 2007 to 10% in 2014.
